BY MIKE METTLER – APRIL 9, 2018

Yes have made some major plans to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2018 and 2019.

First up is this summer’s 50th Anniversary North American tour titled #YES50: Celebrating 50 Years of Yes. The 30-plus-date outing, which kicks off June 5 and 6, 2018 with a two-night engagement at the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles, Illinois, is mapped out below. (A handful of additional dates will be announced soon.)

“Much has changed since I joined Yes in 1970, but the core elements of the band have remained consistent,” says guitarist Steve Howe. “We want to mark this anniversary with a tour that encompasses some of our best-loved work, and revisit a few classic pieces that have been lost for a while. We look forward to sharing the 50th anniversary with the fanbase, playing classic songs that celebrate the broad musical style of Yes.”

Adds drummer Alan White, “I have been blessed to be a member of this amazing band’s rhythm section for the past 46 years, mostly in the company of my great friend Chris Squire, and latterly alongside Chris’ chosen successor, Billy Sherwood, who is receiving recognition for stepping into Chris’ pre-eminent bass and vocals. Each night, we are pausing to reflect on Chris’ importance to Yes, his desire that we should continue to share Yes music on stages worldwide, and the specific dedication of ‘Onward’ to his huge memory. I’m so grateful to continue to be performing on stages for our dedicated fans and look forward to celebrating our 50th Anniversary in America. It has been a great ride!”

Billy Sherwood, the low-end Yes master.

The SoundBard has interviewed most members of the many different incarnations of Yes over the years (including the late, great Chris Squire), and I can also attest to Sherwood’s acumen at stepping into what could have been a most difficult role. “The institution of Yes is huge and vast and global,” Sherwood told me in August 2016. “Chris was loved by so many people. It was his wish for me to take over for him. That was his plan, not mine. (chuckles) It’s a pretty amazing thing to think about, but that’s how he wanted it — so here we are. I’m also grateful to be able to paint between the lines. There are a few areas where I’m able to take it a little sideways.”

Finally, keyboardist Geoff Downes observes, “Being a member of the band during its 50th anniversary is a privilege and honor. It is awe-inspiring to reflect on the caliber and invention of the musicians who have forged the legacy of Yes since 1968, always pushing the boundaries. Playing onstage with founder member Tony Kaye to launch the 50th anniversary [on this year’s Cruise to the Edge] was a wonderful experience for the band and our fans, to whom we dedicate this special tour.”

During this summer’s shows, Yes — guitarist Steve Howe, drummer Alan White, keyboardist Geoff Downes, vocalist Jon Davison, and bassist Billy Sherwood — will perform a special classic hits concert to commemorate the landmark occasion. Besides the massive #YES50 tour, details for the sixth annual Cruise To The Edge — prog rock’s premier festival at sea — have also been announced.

Anchored by Yes, the five-night 2019 Cruise To The Edge (a.k.a. CTTE) is set to sail from Tampa, Florida on February 4-9, 2019 aboard Royal Caribbean’s award-winning Brilliance Of The Seas, visiting two ports of call: Key West, Florida and Cozumel, Mexico.

Joining Yes will be Steve Hackett, Mike Portnoy, CTTE newcomer Riverside, and Fish, the respected former lead vocalist of Marillion, who will be making a rare North American appearance and his first on the cruise, performing selections from his old band along with solo material from his illustrious career.

The 2019 lineup will also feature several other iconic CTTE newcomers, including Jordan Rudess from Dream Theater, Pendragon, Gazpacho, Brand X, Marbin, UniKuE, Magic Pie, and Alan Hewitt’s One Nation. Other esteemed CTTE alumni confirmed to return include PFM, Frost, Soft Machine, Spock’s Beard, Enchant, Airbag, Baraka, Electric Asturias, IO Earth, Dave Kerzner’s In Continuum, District 97, and the David Cross Band. Also, special guest and newly minted Rock and Roll Hall of Famer John Lodge of The Moody Blues will be making his encore appearance with his 10,000 Light Years Band, playing solo material and Moody Blues favorites. Finally, UK journalist and Yes historian Jon Kirkman will emcee and moderate the cruise.
